Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Children’s Negative Cognitive Errors Questionnaire (CNCEQ) in a young sample population. CNCEQ is one of the most widely used self-report procedures for measuring four types of cognitive distortion (catastrophic thinking, overgeneralisation, personalisation, and selective abstraction) in three content areas (social, academic and sports). Despite this, there are no studies that analyse the properties of the instrument among young people. The study used a large sample (N = 2040; aged 12 to 22 years; 50.7% male and 47.3% female) from different educational establishments. Construct validity was assessed using exploratory factor analysis, and internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Mean contrasts were also performed to assess discriminant validity and a correlation and regression analysis was carried out to explore criterion validity. The results indicate that CNCEQ allows the assessment of self-degrading cognitive distortions among young people with sufficient psychometric guarantees. Its use by teachers will allow them to adapt their activities to take into account the presence of cognitive distortions among their students.
