Linguistic neighbours, cultural strangers: translating Mayombe by Pepetela from Portuguese to Spanish
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study shows an example of ideological interference in the creation of the image of a distant culture, such as the Angolan, through the translation to Castilian Spanish from a language as close as Portuguese. The analysis of the foot-notes inserted by the translators in the Spanish version reveals a translating strategy of making the text appear foreign. This same strategy underlies determined linguistic borrowing in the Spanish text that demonstrates the presence of stereotypes in the translation that are not present in the original. The objective of the study is to underline the relevance to translating practice of the study of literary translations between two languages that are very close, but which, however, convey very distant cultures.
