Influencers and public relations in the sports industry: analysis of Spanish athletes on Instagram
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social media has changed the relationship between sports and public relations. The classic role of the brand prescriber has evolved, giving way in the online world to the figure of the influencer. This article examines the research in this area to find out whether the role of athletes as brand collaborators on social media has begun to receive attention from an academic point of view. A content analysis was carried out focusing on the Instagram posts of the 20 Spanish athletes with the highest number of followers. The results show a clear evolution in the impact and communication style of athletes as brand prescribers. The conclusions presented may be of interest both to public relations professionals and for future research.
