Abstract

The literary analysis of any text may be refined and developed by combining it with a linguistic analysis of the content. While the object literary and linguistic scholarship differs, a linguist can provide insight into elements of the text’s construction, such as frame of reference, enunciation or modality, just as literary texts have long been used to illustrate the occurrence of linguistic phenomena or to formulate theories about language. This article examines the short story, ‘Sobre da morte do Bieito’, by Rafael Dieste, to illustrate how a linguistic analysis based on frame of reference, enunciation and modality can contribute to a better understanding of the literary text.
