Inscribed in a context of literary-environmental research, we would like to reflect on environmental education on the short story “Intermedium with the cowboy Mariano” (1969), by the Brazilian João Guimarães Rosa. In this tale it is possible to perceive several elements that make up the experience in Environmental Education, as the character Mariano, a cowboy who lives in the wetlands of Pantanal, demonstrates having local knowledge and therefore lives and knows deftly in this peculiar environment. The Pantanal is one of the Brazilian biomes of wetlands, currently heavily attacked with various socio-environmental violence. Literature seems like an education itinerary, allows for various reflections, and can contribute to experiences and cartographies in the context of environmental education. In this sense, the cowboy Mariano demonstrates respect and living carefully with everything that involves him: He is aware and sensitive to biodiversity, as Rosa expresses these knowledge, experiences, and feelings of the literary character about the various Pantanals.
Poetics emerges in an aesthetic context that is political, as literature overflows with the importance of knowledge in the care of different species, in addition to the importance of landmark of the Pantanal´s landscape.
