Abstract

The advances in information technology in recent decades have changed the way many societies in today’s world live and work. Technological tools and resources that did not even exist a few years ago have now become part of daily life for thousands of millions of people. Digital libraries are a prime example of these new technologies and of how important the internet has become. This article explains some of the key features and functions of digital libraries, and the computer tools that make them possible. It also identifies some of the challenges facing researchers in this area, and the efforts and progress being made to meet and overcome them.
