Abstract

Upon his death in 2000, José Luís Pensado Tomé left behind an immense body of philological scholarship, the fruit of decades of careful and conscientious research and a professorial career spanning universities in Spain, most notably in Madrid, Oviedo and Salamanca, and abroad, through visiting professorships in Texas and Wisconsin. His scholarly devotion to Galicia, its language, its history and its people is reflected in an extensive catalogue of academic studies, essays for general readership and scrupulously edited collections of historical Galician authors. One of the authors Pensado returned to most often was the Galician Benedictine monk and scholar, Martín Sarmiento, whose influence and example permeated his whole life’s work.
