  In the 1980’s, important social movements formed around an ecological conscience, but also around a strategic conscience. Regarding the later, there was a democratization and an appropriation of the knowledge that had almost always been reserved for the military, and a gro wing perception of the reciprocity of security. At the same time, different indications made it necessary to articulate the struggle for peace and the struggle for the preservation of the environment. Some years later, it is worth recapping the lessons that came to fruition back then.

• Another reading of the history of Environmental Education and some notes on the present crisis

  The purpose of this paper is to “deconstruct” the trajectory of Environmental Education (EE) in order to try to go beyond the lineal historical view, decontextualized, without subjects and without con flicts, that predominates in the literature on this field. The institutional versions usually begin with the Stockholm Con ference (1972) and finish with the last celebration established by the United Nations system, a milestone that is nowadays held by the 4th International Conference on Environmental Education Tbilisi + 30, held in Ahmedabad (India) in the year 2007.

  In this itinerary, a central position, equivalent to a founding myth, is held by the con ference that took place in Tbilisi in 1977 and the recommendations that came out of it. The goal of this historical and critical approach is to shed some light -or at least a different light- on the task of unraveling and understanding the alleged -or real- crisis that is being felt in the field of EE and the role the myth of Tbilisi plays in this situation. As a methodological resource, the analytical approach taken is halfway between Foucault’s archaeology of the discourse and Bourdieu’s social analysis.

  The environmental threats have been awakening human sensitivity to a deep change. The ecological and environmental studies have been increasing and the constant environmental disasters have obliged people to strongly interfere in all educational levels. Thus the Environmental Educational Concept has evolved from a conservative view to a constant worry focused on education. It has passed through a stage in which sustainability is the main issue. The evolution of this concept reflects not only the environmental worries but also on what concerns the political and educational responsibilities.

• Educational horizons in the path of Human Development

  The Human Development Reports, published by the United Nations Development Program since the 1990’s, contain a set of important pedagogical referents to justify the need for a Social and Environmental Education of a markedly ethical, civic and political nature. Based on such a hypothesis, the reading of the concept of Human Development, institutionalized at the heart of the United Nations Organization, suggests that education must serve to widen the options of different people and social groups, offering each one the opportunity to lead a life they have reasons to value, so that the inhabitants of the planet may exercise the freedom to be who they are and take part in all the benefits of their development. In any case, these perspectives point to the project of an education that is meant to be essentially critical with the current models of wealth, growth, progress, social welfare, quality of life, etc., as well as with the generation of the alternatives that are to replace them.

  Throughout the last quarter of the 19th century, the struggle against tuberculosis intensified in all European countries as a means of protecting children who were in the curable and non­contagious stages of the disease. Different institutions began to be built for this purpose, such as seaside sanatoriums -with great presence and relevance in many European countries- in order to fight and destroy, as far as possible, the tubercle bacillus. In 1910 Spain opened the first institutions of this kind, funded by the State, in the old lazarettos of Pedrosa (Santander) and Oza (A Coruña). These places were converted into seaside sanatoriums for children with latent tuberculosis, who would be sent there by town councils, provincial governments, charity organizations and private individuals so they could undergo what was then called a “hygiene cure”, that is, fresh air, sunlight, sea, good food and rest. Added to all this was a program of education in the open air, which was perfectly compatible with the medical treatments required by their fragile health. The defining chara cteristic of this type of institutions was undoubtedly the perfect combination of medicine and pedagogy.

  Environmental pedagogy as a concept can lead us to a myriad of approaches. Its expressions are as varied as the environmental education experiences carried out in the thirty-four years that have elapsed since the well-known world meeting in Belgrade in 1975. Three decades of a diversity of approaches, actions and applied methodologies which, in the case of Latin America, have been uniquely creative and shaped a beautiful and vibrant dance. I would like to describe it here in seven steps that are part of a brilliant choreography, the summing up of the rhythms and cadences of our educational times.

  This paper is not just a summary of graphic design rules applied to Heritage Interpreting, but a manifesto regarding what a graphic interpreter is and in what situation these pro fessionals are nowadays. The work of a graphic interpreter is included in “non personal” Heritage Interpretation, done by an interpreter who is not present at the time of the public’s visit and carried out through elements of graphic communication. The paper tries to shed some light on a complex, undervalued profession. The origin of this situation is In the lack of awareness of the entire creative process.

• The challenges of energy knowledge management in the municipalities of Cuba

  In order to tackle the energy problem in the development of the Cuban municipalities, Redenerg (National Network for Energy Knowledge Management) developed a knowledge management tool known as NOME (municipal energy nodes) that allows the intellectual capital in energy matters within the municipality to be organized, in order to support municipal governments in the management of energy problems linked to local municipal development. The experience of setting up NOME in four municipalities in the country’s central region (Jatibonico, Placetas, Fomento and Aguada de Pasajeros) led to the identification of the problems that hinder local energy management from the point of view of knowledge management. The paper presents the problems identified in the municipalities, the work strategy designed to tackle those problems, the results achieved and the prospects in the area of generalization.

  Ecotourism is an environmentally responsible modality in which the users enjoy being in contact with nature and with varied cultural expressions, encouraging an active involvement that is socio-economically beneficial for the local population. At the same time, it may become a fundamental tool to improve the inhabitants’ quality of life, contribute to the biodiversity conservation, and rescue the cultural patrimony of a determined region. In this context, work has been being carried out since 2002 in the Cuenca Carbonifera Río Turbio (Argentine Patagonia), using as an emblematic species the Andean Condor, which due to its biologic and cultural value and global-level interest was considered key in stimulating these activities in the area, being a complement to other existing touristic offers. The studies made possible to identify the resting sites and use zones in the area of influence of the towns, quantify its abundance and determine areas with potential tourist attraction. These studies were accompanied by several activities with the community by means of public participation processes, environmental education, and training of the local actors as Site Guides, in order for them to be the protagonists in the creation of this new development alternative and the direct beneficiaries.

• The SEREA project: a sustainable approach to social and economic restructuring in coastal fishing and shellfishing

  From 2006 to the end of 2008, the SEREA project, Fishing and Shellfishing Supplementary Activities, brought together fishing organizations, public administrations, universities and innovation and dissemination centers from three fishing regions in Europe: Galicia, Brittany and Sardinia. The main goal was to promote the creation of a social, economic and labor restructuration model in the coastal fishing sector, based on the philosophy of promoting social participation in the management of change.
