High school education or technical training? Socio-educational strategies of students’ parents in Viana do Castelo (1888-1947)

Technical training was introduced into the educational landscape of Viana do Castelo in 1888 as an alternative to the academic model practised by the local high school, founded in 1853. This article examines the socio-professional distribution of students’ parents in relation to the educational strategy chosen for each child, including parents with children enrolled in both types of education. The study traces the evolution of parents’ choices over the course of three political regimes based on a series of detailed case studies. The research is based on a problematising comparative analysis of two mostly unpublished documentary sources: the enrolment books for each school, and the electoral register of the town.
