Abstract

In recent decades, the increasing number of children and adolescents involved in international migration has attracted growing attention within the field of socio-educational research. In this context, the development of ethnic identity is a significant challenge for migrant adolescents, particularly given the hierarchical relationship between the dominant culture and minority cultures within the host society. Furthermore, life satisfaction is a key indicator of psychosocial adjustment in acculturation processes. This article has two aims. First, it examines ethnic identity and acculturation across different stages of adolescence (early, middle, and late) among young migrants. Second, it analyses the relationship between these developmental stages and life satisfaction. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 295 adolescents from 33 countries, aged 11-19 years (M = 15.24; SD = 2.01). The results indicate higher levels of life satisfaction in early adolescence than in late adolescence. No statistically significant differences were found across the dimensions of ethnic identity and acculturation. The findings highlight the importance of considering this developmental stage when examining the experiences of migrant adolescents, given the complex challenges associated with adaptation and acculturation they undergo. Possible socio-educational implications are suggested for the development of public and educational policies aimed at promoting their well-being.
