Abstract

Currently, sport psychology has gained significant importance by acknowledging how psychological variables and the social and family environment influence children's motivation, performance, and continuity in sports practice. This research focuses on comparing the evolution of motivational climates between players and families across formative stages in various youth soccer categories, ranging from Benjamín (under-8) to Cadete (under-16), inclusive. The sample comprises 1692 players and families (Benjamín = 299, Alevín = 496, Infantil = 454, and Cadete = 443), distributed across the top categories of seven youth soccer clubs in the city of Zaragoza (Spain). Data collection utilized a specially designed questionnaire incorporating the task and ego dimensions of the Achievement Goal Scale for Youth Sports and its adaptation for the players' families. The results revealed that players exhibit a task-oriented motivational climate in the lower categories (4.69±.38), whereas families display an ego-oriented focus from the earliest stages, with an increase in the higher stages (4.34±.61). The primary conclusion of this study emphasizes that the discrepancies in the perception of motivational climates between players and families highlight the need to implement educational programs in grassroots clubs, primarily directed towards families.
