Abstract

The International Prize for Sacred Architecture granted by the Frate Sole Foundation, for twenty-five years, makes it possible to monitor the state of the art regarding contemporary religious architecture. Its seven editions offer an unbeatable architectonic panorama for the Christian confessional destiny. Focusing on Catholic architecture in the Far East, the work proposes to analyze the works submitted in the last two editions, and to identify project decisions on architecture and iconography. In this way, the formal expressions and built materials will be observed, the relationship between temple and nature, and an attempt will be made to recognize in the images the acting influences, Western or specifically Eastern. The participating production of the award is a catalog for the study of temples and their conception, capable of nourishing these and other observations.

Author Biographies

Analía Ester Benítez, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata

Architect graduated from the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP), Argentina (2004). Master in Urban Architectural Heritage Management, Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design, FAUD, UNMdP (2012). PhD student in Architecture and Urbanism at the same university, preparing her thesis. Former CONICET (National Council of Scientific and Technical Research) Fellow. Researcher at IEHPaC (Institute for the Study of History, Heritage and Material Culture). Lecturer in the Workshop on History of Architecture and Contemporary Thought I to III (Architecture and Industrial Design); in the University Degree in Cultural Management, and in the Master's Degree from which she is a graduate. Invited lecturer on Architecture and Sacred Art for the subject Liturgy, Professor of Theology, University School of Theology, Bishopric of Mar del Plata. Secretary of the College of Architects of the Province of Buenos Aires, District IX (2016-19).

Christian Michael Seegerer, Universidade Anhembi Morumbi

Architect, CAU-UNIP, 1995. Extensive professional practice in various design issues, and in particular, sacred buildings. Master in the Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, Brazil, with the dissertation 'Contemporary Sacred Architecture. Survey and analysis of works (2000-2015)', concluded in April 2019. Oral communication at the V CIARC entitled 'Form, structure and symbolism: a modern project in Brasilia for the National Presbyterian Church' (Santiago, Chile, 2017). Oral communication at the Ibero-American Symposium on Religious Architecture: Trends, plastics and spaces in the 20th and 21st centuries held at the 56th International Congress of Americanists entitled 'Church of St. Benedict of Morumbi: materiality in the architecture and art of the Second Vatican Council' (Salamanca, Spain, 2018).
