Un siglo de arquitectura religiosa en Filipinas (1921-2021)

Resumen

Tratar de condensar en un solo artículo la arquitectura religiosa producida durante el siglo XX en Filipinas es una tarea ardua. Se trata de un país con noventa millones de fieles católicos, el tercero del mundo, tras Brasil y México, por lo que la cantidad de iglesias recientes es muy alta. Y aunque entre ellas existen obras que se encuentran al nivel de las arquitecturas más celebradas internacionalmente, esa ingente producción contemporánea apenas ha sido estudiada en su conjunto —y mucho menos difundida— ni dentro ni fuera de sus fronteras. En este texto se muestran algunos ejemplos significativos que pretenden ilustrar los tres periodos en los que se ha dividido el siglo XX, cada uno de ellos de unos cuarenta años: la colonia americana (1898-1946), la independencia y posterior dictadura (1946-86) y la época plenamente democrática (1986-2021). Finalmente, se hace una breve referencia a la arquitectura de las demás confesiones cristianas y de otras religiones minoritarias.

Biografía del autor/a

Esteban Fernández-Cobián, Universidade da Coruña

Esteban Fernández-Cobián (1969). Doctor arquitecto, es Profesor Titular en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de La Coruña (España), donde dirige una línea de investigación sobre la construcción del espacio sagrado en la arquitectura contemporánea. Desde 2014, también forma parte del claustro académico de UPAEP (Puebla, México). Además de numerosos artículos, ha escrito las monografías «Fray Coello de Portugal, dominico y arquitecto» (2001), «El espacio sagrado en la arquitectura española contemporánea» (2005), «Le Corbusier. Proyectos para la Iglesia católica» (2015) y «Arquitectura religiosa del siglo XXI en España» (2020). Desde el año 2007, organiza los Congresos Internacionales de Arquitectura Religiosa Contemporánea; en 2018 creó OARC-Observatorio de Arquitectura Religiosa Contemporánea. Es editor de AARC.
