Abstract

This paper intends to enlighten the relationship between the architect and the client on the example of the construction of the church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Zagreb whose construction started in 1934 and today is almost finished. The project is a result of continuous cooperation between the architects Zorana Sokol-Gojnik and Igor Gojnik and the representative of the Franciscan Province, liturgist Ante Crncevic, who was in charge of the liturgical program, and Ivan Maletic, who was in charge of organizing the construction and financing.
In this project, every architectural gesture and every place in the space has been carefully considered in an open and confidential dialogue between the architect and the liturgical theologian, in real mutual trust, humility, and teachability. The role of the architect is that of a conductor or director who must constantly keep the entire space under control and bring the parts into harmonious relationships.

Author Biographies

  • Zorana Sokol-Gojnik, University of Zagreb (Croatia)

    Zorana Sokol Gojnik, is an assistant professor at the Department of Design of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb. Her area of ​​scientific and professional is directed towards sacred architecture from phenomenological and hermeneutical points of view. In her scientific work, she participated in seven scientific research projects at the Faculty of Architecture and published scientific papers related to the subject of sacred architecture in relevant scientific journals. In 2017 she published the book „ Sacred architecture of Zagreb. Catholic liturgical buildings“. As part of his pedagogical work at the Faculty of Architecture of Zagreb, she holds lectures on „Sacred Architecture“, „Croatian Space and Architecture“ and „Sustainable Architecture“. In collaboration with the architectural office "Siloueta" [www.siloueta.hr] she has realized numerous architectural projects.

  • Igor Gojnik, Independent Scholar (Zagreb, Croatia)

    Igor Gojnik obtained a doctorate of science with the theme „Daylight as a factor of architectonic and identity of architectural space “. His scientific interest is directed toward the theory of architecture from phenomenological and hermeneutical viewpoints and the phenomenon of quantitative/qualitative analysis of daylight in architectural space with a specific interest in the problem of daylight in sacred architecture. He is the author of scientific articles published in scientific journals and international scientific conferences. He participated in scientific research projects at the Faculty of Architecture of Zagreb. He leads architectural office “Siloueta” in Zagreb. [www.siloueta.hr]. He is the author of a series of architectural realizations, projects, and studies and won several awards at architectural competitions.

  • Ante Crnčević , University of Zagreb (Croatia)

    Ante Crnčević, OFM, is a full professor in the Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Zagreb and a member of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Redeemer. He has taught liturgy at the University of Zagreb since 2000 and has served as head of the Department of Liturgy since 2007. He also served as the head of the Croatian Institute for Liturgical Pastoral Care (HILP) at the Croatian Bishops’ Conference (2004-2021), and as Editor-in-Chief of the "Živo vrelo" liturgical review. He holds a Ph.D. in liturgical sciences from the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy, Rome. He published several books and many articles on various liturgical topics, including theological reflections on liturgical space and liturgical architecture.
