Abstract

The development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) begins early in life and is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Resistance training (RT) is proposed as a means to reduce CVD risk and improve lipid profile in overweight and obese children and adolescents. In order to examine the effects of an RT programme in this population group, a systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA and protocol and using a total of five databases (Pubmed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science). A total of 11 studies met the final inclusion criteria. The results of these studies indicated that supervised PE interventions performed at least 3 days per week with lasting 8 weeks significantly improved lipid parameters of cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Consequently, it was concluded that RT programmes can be considered as a suitable non-pharmacological treatment to improve the lipid profile and cardiovascular health of overweight and obese children and adolescents.
