Abstract

This paper heads a series of three essays that share the topic of power abuse. In each and every one of them the theme is developed in a synchronic way, focusing on a specific theatre play. In this first essay we write on the Baroque tragedy La Estrella de Sevilla, whose authorship is discussed by some scholars. We deal with power abuse and how it influences the different protagonists of the play. In the next two ones, in addition, we analyse the topic in a diachronic and comparative way in different plays from the History of Literature, up to the 19th century, ending with a connection to an opera by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe.
