About the Journal
Focus and scope
Arts-Based Educational Research is a growing field of inquiry into the role of the arts in education. The International Journal of Arts-Based Educational Research (IJABER) publishes original research on teacher training standards, aesthetic experience, contemporary art, cultural diversity, inclusivity and identity in visual discourse, and artivism as an agent of social transformation in education. Manuscripts are reviewed by international experts in arts education, and selected for publication based on the artistic and visual results of the research. The aim of the journal is to provide a forum in which to explore the relationship between art and teaching methodologies in Arts Education, and to act as a stimulus and inspiration to researchers in arts education, architecture, fine arts and design, to expand and enrich the field of Arts-Based Educational Research.
Assessment of manuscripts (peer review)
Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged in all cases. This acknowledgement does not imply acceptance of the manuscript for publication.
The review process will consist of two stages
- Internal review
The internal review conducted by the Editorial Team will first assess whether the manuscript is relevant to the subject areas of the journal. Secondly, manuscripts will be screened for matches and similarities with previously published work using Similarity Check text comparison software (by Crossref and iThenticate). Manuscripts found to contain unattributed duplication of material from their own published work or that of others, omission of sources, or unauthorised use of content by other authors will be rejected. Manuscripts which pass the first two steps will be checked to assess their compliance with the structure, format and layout requirements outlined in the Author guidelines and Publication guidelines (see Authors). - External review
Manuscripts which pass the first stage of the review process will be forwarded for external peer review by independent experts in the area covered by the article. IJABER operates a system of double-blind peer review, meaning that author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa.
Reviewers are required to submit a report of their assessment, in accordance with the External Review Protocol, containing one of the following recommendations:
Accept without changes or with minor formal changes only
Accept with modifications
Modify and resubmit for review
Reject
Authors will be notified through the corresponding author of the results of each evaluation and the reviewers’ comments, and will be required to implement any changes recommended within the stipulated time frame.
Open access policy
All of the journal’s content is available in open access, on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
IJABER does not charge contributors any submission or publication fees (APCs), and does not charge readers for access to journal content.
All articles published by IJABER are subject to a Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 use and distribution licence which allows content to be shared and adapted in accordance with the terms of attribution and distribution. The journal owns the rights to the content of the journal, but grants unrestricted access to the authors.
Authors are the holders of the exploitation rights (copyright) of their work, but grant the right of first publication to the International Journal of Arts-Based Educational Research (IJABER), which may publish in any language and format as well as publish and distribute their whole or partial content by any technologically available means and via data base.
Authors are allowed and encouraged to disseminate the articles accepted for publication on personal or institutional websites, before and after their publication, provided it is clearly stated that the work is in this journal and all bibliographic data are provided along with access to the document, preferably through the DOI (if it is indispensable to use a pdf, the final version formatted by the journal should be used). In the case of articles resulting from funded studies or projects, this will be done within the deadlines and terms established by the supporting organisation(s) of the published research.
Frequency of publication
IJABER is published twice a year.
Languages of publication
IJABER accepts original manuscripts in Spanish and English. Journal metadata (title, abstract, keywords) should be provided in both languages in all cases.
Publication guidelines
Manuscripts submitted for publication must not have been published previously in any other medium and not be in the process of being reviewed by another journal.
IJABER is published by the University of A Coruña (UDC). UDC is a member of Crossref and uses its Similarity Check plagiarism detection software in all of its journals in order to ensure the originality of all manuscripts accepted for publication. |

The decision to publish or not will be based solely on the quality of the research presented, respecting the principle of IMPARTIALITY and the intellectual freedom of the authors. The journal will also protect the right to INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY over research results, establish measures to avoid plagiarism or the publication of research without authors’ consent, and take all measures necessary to correct undesirable conduct and restore any rights that have been threatened or undermined.

Authors are responsible for the content and originality of the submitted manuscript, and will refrain from all forms of plagiarism and self-plagiarism, and the unauthorised use of content by other authors (images, graphs, etc.)
Any significant errors or circumstances detected after publication should be notified to the editors as soon as possible to allow them to assess the situation and take any measures that may be necessary.
