Dark leadership: toxic leadership and its impact on the hotel industry
Main Article Content
Abstract
Leadership can be the difference between a company failing or succeeding. Leadership research is, therefore, a growing field of study that explores how leaders generate positive outcomes for their organisations. However, not all managers have a positive impact. As different studies show, in certain sectors, such as the hotel industry, so-called ‘destructive leadership’ is a common phenomenon which generates significant negative effects for organisations and their members. The aim of this paper is to examine a selection of leadership styles and to analyse some of their effects on hotel workers, in order to account for the high rates of absenteeism and turnover common in the sector nowadays and which have made it more difficult for hotel companies to attract and retain human capital. The study focuses in particular on the impact of abusive supervision and despotic leadership styles on employee motivation to continue working in the hotel industry. Primary data were collected from a sample of employees currently working in hotels with Q-mark quality certification from the Spanish Institute of Tourism Quality. The results of the study demonstrate the negative influence of these dark leadership styles on motivation to continue working in the hotel sector.
