Abstract

Trail running events can make a significant positive contribution to a tourism destination by focusing attention on the cultural and natural landscape that surrounds them. The aim of this study is to analyse the construction of the tourism landscape around the Puerto Vallarta by UTMB race event. The study used a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews, participant observation, GIS management, photography and specialised literature. The results show that the Day of the Dead holiday, tourist attractions such as the tallest Calavera Catrina and the local Wixárika culture have a significant social impact on the behaviour and values of Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors. These stereotypical points of view are necessary in order to understand how Puerto Vallarta’s image and identity as a tourist destination are constructed through the Puerto Vallarta by UTMB event.
