Exercise interventions, have demonstrated favorable effects on aerobic capacity, muscle strength, total cholesterol levels and systolic blood pressure, in addition, it allows individuals with intelectual disability (ID) to participate in a wider range of activities, producing even greater health benefits. Objective: To study the effect of a physical-recreational activity program on cardiorespiratory fitness and body adiposity parameters in individuals with ID attending an occupational training center in the city of Rivera, Uruguay. Methods: Seventeen men and seven women participated in recreational physical activities twice a week for 15 weeks. At the beginning and end of the intervention, data were obtained on body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and cardiorespiratory fitness by means of the Ruffier index (RI). Results: BMI in women and men showed no significant differences and an insignificant effect; similar behavior was observed in CC. In the IR, women had no significant differences, so the effect was also inconsequential, while men had significant differences, but with an inconsequential effect size. Conclusion: Some modifications in anthropometric parameters and in the RI have been presented, however, these had an inconsequential effect, suggesting to increase the weekly frequency in the intervention programs, promoting the reduction of cardiovascular risk in the future.
