The spatial and functional mechanism of the “faux plafond”: Eileen Gray.
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article deals with the functional and spatial mechanism of the ‘faux plafond’ used by the architect Eileen Gray in small-sized homes. The introduction of this type of domestic storage systems in projects such as the apartment for Jean Badovici in the Rue de Chateaubriand in Paris (1931) or in the house “Tempe à pailla” (1932-1934), called for well studied indoor sections of the home to come about and for the design of ingenious accesses whose aim was to make the absolute most of the space created. In other words, the use of minimum scale constructions transformed the home, making the most of the living space.
