Background and viability of alternatives in the current system-world

Abstract
The paper goes though different moments of the world-system, from the Cold War to today, showing that alternatives have always been there even when they are denied. The same can be said today, when the system is very far from equilibrium, and therefore less energy input is needed to produce a change in it. The current imbalances are represented on the one hand in the appearance of the emerging countries, the crisis of hegemony and the existence of underdeveloping countries and, on the other hand, by the accumulation of interconnected crises (economic, food, energy and environmemt but also democratic).
