Resumen

Este año se cumple el quincuagésimo aniversario de la Convención para la Protección del Patrimonio Mundial Cultural y Natural, adoptada el 16 de noviembre de 1972. En sus cincuenta años de existencia, la Convención ha resultado ser uno de los instrumentos normativos más exitosos de la UNESCO, tanto por el número de ratificaciones como por la fama de la designación de patrimonio mundial entre la población general. No obstante, en la actualidad el tratado también se enfrenta a serios desafíos que amenazan su capacidad para alcanzar sus dos objetivos principales: proteger el patrimonio de valor universal excepcional y contribuir a la paz y la seguridad internacionales. Este artículo analiza esos retos abiertos y, al hacerlo, pretende proporcionar una aproximación a la situación de la Convención en 2022.
